Overview
The Motorola DP4800e is the full-keypad DMR portable of Motorola’s DP4000e family, built for operations that run many talkgroups and need more than a channel knob. A colour display presenting five lines of information, a full keypad and five programmable buttons put the fleet’s structure in front of the user, while 1000 channels give system planners room to grow. Freeform text messaging lets staff send written updates when voice traffic is heavy or silence is required, and the housing is sealed to IP68 for immersion up to 2 metres for 2 hours under IEC 60529. For Saudi security companies, industrial facilities and event operations that coordinate large teams across many groups, the Motorola DP4800e is the interface-rich workhorse of the range.
How the Motorola DP4800e works in practice
One hardware platform covers three frequency ranges — VHF 136-174 MHz, UHF 403-527 MHz and 300-360 MHz in the 300 MHz band — with transmit power of 5 W on VHF and 4 W on UHF and 300 MHz at high level, plus a 1 W low setting. Digital operation follows DMR Tier II and Tier III to ETSI TS 102 361, so the radio works on conventional systems and trunked networks, while analogue mode keeps it compatible with older fleets during a phased migration. Speech is handled by the AMBE+2 vocoder, the receiver reaches 0.16 µV on analogue (12 dB SINAD) and 0.14 µV on digital (5% BER), and ±0.5 ppm frequency stability keeps transmissions on channel. Channel spacing of 12.5, 20 and 25 kHz is supported, with 20 kHz not available on the 300 MHz band, and rated audio output is 0.5 W. The radio is specified to operate from -30 °C to +60 °C, covering Saudi summer heat on exposed sites and cold-store interiors alike.
The colour display and keypad change how supervisors work: text messages can be composed freehand rather than selected from a fixed list, channels and zones are visible at a glance, and five programmable buttons put frequently used functions one press away. Battery choice spans a NiMH 1400 mAh pack and IMPRES Li-Ion options of 1950, 2100, 2450, 2900 and 3000 mAh; with the largest pack the radio runs up to 29.0 hours digital and 21.5 hours analogue on a 5/5/90 duty profile, enough for extended shifts without mid-day charging.
Where it fits in Saudi operations
The DP4800e earns its place where coordination is dense: industrial plants and utilities in the Kingdom’s industrial cities, airports and logistics hubs, large hospitality venues and mega-events, and security providers dispatching guards across multiple client sites. The 1000-channel capacity lets a single fleet serve many departments or contracts without channel exhaustion, and freeform texting gives control rooms a quiet channel for instructions in noisy halls or during quiet hours in public venues. The deep IP68 immersion rating — 2 metres for 2 hours — and the -30 to +60 °C operating range suit crews moving between air-conditioned interiors and exposed yards all day.
Position within the Motorola DMR family
Against its siblings the choice is about interface and generation. The DP4400e is the simpler unit: no display, no keypad and a smaller channel capacity, aimed at staff who only press and talk. The R7 is the newer flagship, adding an adaptive noise-cancellation audio suite, protection against high-pressure water jets and built-in wireless connectivity. The Motorola DP4800e sits between them: the full keypad, colour display, text messaging and 1000 channels of a supervisor’s radio, on the proven DP4000e platform, with immersion protection verified to 2 metres for 2 hours under IEC 60529.
Deployment notes
The radio ships unprogrammed and is configured through Motorola CPS 2.0 software, so schedule programming — in-house or via your supplier — before issuing units, and use that session to map the five buttons to your operating procedures. If your teams need Bluetooth accessories, order the DP4801e variant, as the DP4800e itself carries no wireless connectivity. Note that fitting the 3000 mAh battery changes the sealing rating to IP67; if the full 2-metre immersion rating is required, select one of the other IMPRES packs. Plan spare batteries for double-shift sites so radios never queue at chargers.
