Overview
The Motorola MTP3000 is a TETRA handheld series built for mission-critical voice, offered in two current members: the MTP3500 with a simple keypad and the MTP3550 with a full keypad. Both share the same chassis, the same radio performance and the same accessory range, so the choice between them is about how much a user types rather than how the radio behaves on air. The series covers 350-470 MHz and 800 MHz wideband, transmits at TETRA Class 4 (1 W) as standard with a Class 3L (1.8 W) high-power option, and is designed around a two-knob interface that separates volume from talkgroup selection.
Why the Motorola MTP3000 suits mission-critical work
That two-knob layout is not a styling choice. On a TETRA network the two things an operator changes under pressure are volume and talkgroup, and giving each its own physical control means both can be found by touch, through gloves, without looking down. The wide transflective display carries 262,144 colours and stays readable in low light and in direct sunlight, which is the condition that defeats many screens on an open site at midday.
Security is layered. Air Interface Encryption is standard across the series, protecting traffic between the terminal and the network. Where a threat model requires protection beyond the air interface, a hardware-enabled End-to-End Encryption option carries the protection across the whole path. That is the specification that typically decides deployments in policing, critical infrastructure and national events.
Safety features and durability
The series carries a man down sensor using static and tilt detection, an emergency alert button and vibrate alert. Together these cover the scenario that matters most in lone or hazardous work: a user who cannot call for help. Static detection raises an alarm when a terminal stops moving for a set period, tilt detection when it lies at an angle consistent with a fall, and vibrate alert makes an incoming call noticeable in noise that would mask a tone.
Durability is rated at IP65, IP66 and IP67, covering dust ingress, high-pressure water jets and immersion to 1 m for 30 minutes. Motorola states the series exceeds all eleven categories of MIL-810 and has passed an Accelerated Life Test simulating more than five years of use. For Saudi deployments the dust and jet ratings are the practical ones, covering both open sites and vehicle wash-down.
Battery options, size and weight
Battery choice spans Li-Ion packs at 1650, 1950, 2150 and 2200 mAh, plus an IMPRES2 3400 mAh option rated IP68. The larger packs change the terminal’s depth: the radio measures 124 x 53 x 33.5 mm with the 1950 mAh battery and 36.7 mm deep with the 2200 or 3400 mAh packs. Weight is 280 g with the 1950 mAh battery. For a shift longer than a standard working day, specify the larger capacity at order time rather than buying spares later, because battery choice also drives which carry accessories fit.
Connectivity covers secure Bluetooth and GNSS using GPS with either BeiDou or GLONASS, so location reporting works alongside voice for dispatch and responder safety. An RFID hardware option is available where terminals must be tracked as assets or tied to a checkpoint routine.
Choosing between the MTP3500 and MTP3550
Take the MTP3550 where users dial numbers, send text messages or navigate menus regularly, since the full keypad makes those tasks quicker and less error-prone. Take the MTP3500 where the workflow is talkgroup-driven and a simpler front panel reduces training and misdials. Because both members share a chassis, batteries and accessories, a single organisation can mix them across roles without splitting its spares inventory, which is usually the deciding practical argument. TETRA operation in Saudi Arabia runs on a licensed network, so deployment is arranged through the network operator rather than per handset.
