Overview
The Motorola XT420 is a licence-free PMR446 handheld for teams that need radios working the same afternoon they arrive. It transmits at 0.5 W on the PMR446 band between 446.00625 and 446.19375 MHz, which in most of Europe and much of the Gulf removes the frequency-licensing step entirely. There is no display and no channel keypad on the front: 16 channels are selected by a single knob, and everything else is set once during programming. That deliberate simplicity is the point, because a radio a new starter cannot misconfigure is a radio that keeps a shift running.
How the Motorola XT420 performs in daily use
Coverage is quoted at up to 9 km line of sight, or roughly 16,250 square metres and 13 floors inside a building, and real figures fall somewhere below that depending on structure and terrain. The 1500 mW speaker is the specification that matters most indoors: it carries a call over plant noise, kitchen extraction and crowd noise where a quieter radio simply loses the message. Audio is backed by 219 privacy codes, comprising 38 CTCSS and 181 DCS options, which keep other PMR446 users in the same building off your channel, and by voice scrambling when a conversation should not be casually overheard.
Channels run at 12.5 kHz bandwidth, and two programmable buttons let a fleet be tuned to one task rather than left generic. VOX and iVOX give hands-free operation for a driver or someone carrying stock, and six selectable call tones let separate teams sharing a site distinguish their own alerts. Programming is done through free CPS software with a cable, so a supervisor can re-tone or re-order channels in-house without a service visit.
Where it fits in Saudi operations
This is a radio for a defined footprint: a hotel, a hospital wing, a school campus, a supermarket, a warehouse, an event floor or a construction compound. Facilities, housekeeping, catering, stewarding and retail teams get the coverage they actually use, without the cost and administration of a licensed fleet. The IP55 rating handles dust and low-pressure water jets, which is the realistic exposure profile for indoor and semi-covered work in Riyadh and Jeddah, though it is not a submersion rating and is not intended for open quarry or offshore duty.
Environmental limits are generous for the region. The XT420 is rated from -30 C to +60 C and tested to MIL-STD 810 C, D, E, F and G, so a unit left in a service vehicle through a Riyadh summer afternoon stays inside its specification. An antimicrobial coating on the housing is a practical detail in healthcare, catering and any operation where handsets pass between shifts.
Choosing between licence-free and licensed radio
The trade-off is worth being explicit about. A licence-free radio costs nothing in spectrum administration and can be handed out immediately, but 0.5 W and a shared public band mean coverage is bounded and the channel is legally open to anyone nearby with a compatible handset. That is entirely acceptable for a hotel, a store or a single compound, where the traffic is short, local and operational. It is the wrong choice for a fleet spread across a city, a site needing guaranteed channel exclusivity, or an operation that must reach a control room kilometres away. The privacy codes and voice scrambling reduce nuisance and casual listening on a shared band, but they are not a substitute for a licensed allocation where exclusivity is a genuine requirement.
Battery, weight and deployment notes
The 2200 mAh Li-Ion battery, part number PMNN4434AR, is rated up to 20 hours on a 5/5/90 duty cycle with battery save enabled, which covers a double shift for most users and means a single overnight charge per handset rather than mid-shift swaps. The radio weighs 244 g with that battery and measures 116 x 58 x 40 mm, so it sits on a belt without pulling.
Fleet planning is straightforward because there is nothing on the front panel to change. Programme the 16 channels and their privacy codes once, label the knob positions, and every handset behaves identically regardless of who picks it up. For sites that need a display, a keypad or higher power, this is the entry point of a wider Motorola range rather than the ceiling of it, and a fleet can be extended later without discarding these units, since they interoperate on matching PMR446 channels and tones.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Motorola XT420 need a frequency licence?
It operates on the licence-free PMR446 band between 446.00625 and 446.19375 MHz at 0.5 W, so in most cases it can be used without applying for frequency allocation.
How far will the XT420 reach?
Up to 9 km line of sight, or around 16,250 square metres and 13 floors inside a building. Actual range depends on structure and terrain.
How long does the battery last?
The 2200 mAh Li-Ion battery (PMNN4434AR) is rated up to 20 hours on a 5/5/90 duty cycle with battery save enabled.
Is the XT420 suitable for dusty or wet sites?
It carries an IP55 rating covering dust and low-pressure water jets, and is tested to MIL-STD 810 C/D/E/F/G from -30 C to +60 C. It is not rated for submersion.
Can the channels be customised?
Yes. The 16 channels, 219 privacy codes and two programmable buttons are set through Motorola's free CPS software with a programming cable.
