Overview
The TYT MD-UV380 is a dual-band DMR handheld that puts digital radio within reach of budgets that would normally buy analog only. It works across 136-174 MHz and 400-480 MHz, runs DMR Tier I and Tier II alongside conventional analog, and carries 3000 channels with 10000 contacts on a colour dual display. Transmit power is 5 W high and 1 W low per the official manual, with a 10 W version offered by the manufacturer. For a site moving from analog to digital in stages, that combination matters more than any single figure: the same handset talks to the old fleet and the new one.
What the TYT MD-UV380 changes on a site
Running DMR Tier II means two-slot TDMA, so a single channel carries two simultaneous conversations. A site that has run out of usable analog channels can effectively double its capacity without applying for more spectrum, which is often the real reason a fleet migrates. Compliance with ETSI TS 102 361-1, -2 and -3 keeps the radio interoperable with other standards-based DMR equipment rather than locking a buyer into one vendor’s ecosystem.
Digital and analog monitoring, plus promiscuous group and private call matching, let a supervisor hear traffic that is not strictly addressed to them, which is exactly what a control position needs during a migration when half the fleet is still analog. Individual, group and all-call are supported, and an encryption function is available where conversations should not be casually decoded off the air.
Safety and fleet-control features
The MD-UV380 carries the supervisory functions that make a fleet manageable rather than merely audible. Remote kill, stun and activate let a control room disable a handset that has left the site or gone missing and restore it later, a routine requirement in contract security and equipment-hire operations. Lone worker and emergency alarm cover staff working unaccompanied, in plant rooms, on night shifts or across large yards. Transmit interrupt lets a supervisor break into a channel that someone is holding open, which in an incident is the difference between issuing an instruction and waiting for one.
Eight hours of on-board recording is unusual at this price. For dispatch operations, incident review and training it removes the argument about what was actually said, and it does so without a logging server behind it.
Where it fits in Saudi operations
This radio suits organisations that need digital features on a large handset count: security contractors, facilities teams across multi-building campuses, logistics yards, event operations and municipal crews. Dual-band coverage lets one purchase serve both a VHF outdoor plan and a UHF indoor plan, which is common where a compound has open ground and dense structures on the same site.
Operating range is -10 C to +40 C at altitudes below 2000 m. That covers ordinary indoor and shaded outdoor work across the Kingdom, but it is worth planning around: a handset baking in direct sun on a summer afternoon in Riyadh or Jeddah can exceed the top of that band, so shaded storage and vehicle placement out of direct sun are sensible practice rather than optional advice.
Battery, programming and deployment notes
The standard battery is 2200 mAh, with Type-C charging battery options at 2800 mAh and 3600 mAh. Fleets running long shifts should specify the larger options up front, because battery choice is the main variable in how many spares a site has to stock. The antenna shipped with the radio is rated at 1.5 dBi.
A programming cable and Windows PC software are included, so channel plans, contact lists, colour codes and time-slot assignments are configured in-house. That matters at 3000 channels: a fleet this size is defined by its codeplug, and being able to revise it without a service call keeps a migration moving. The radio is certified to CE and FCC under FCC ID POD-MDUV380, meets the RED Directive 2014/53/EU, and its SAR assessment follows EN 62209-2:2010. Digital operation on VHF or UHF business frequencies in Saudi Arabia still requires the appropriate regulatory licence for the frequencies in use.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the TYT MD-UV380 digital or analog?
Both. It runs DMR Tier I and Tier II digital alongside conventional analog, so it can operate with an existing analog fleet during a staged migration.
How many channels and contacts does it hold?
It holds 3000 channels and 10000 contacts, managed through the included Windows programming software and cable.
What transmit power does it deliver?
The official manual lists 5 W on high power and 1 W on low. The manufacturer also offers a 10 W version of this model.
Does it record conversations?
Yes, it provides eight hours of on-board recording, which is useful for incident review and training without a separate logging server.
What are the operating temperature limits?
It is rated from -10 C to +40 C at altitudes below 2000 m, so handsets should be stored in shade rather than direct summer sun.
